Methylation: The Hidden Link Among Alcoholism, Autism, Cancer and More

Methylation is a subject that keeps coming up again and again for my sons and myself.  It’s one of those all-encompassing issues like toxicity or gut dysbiosis because so many diseases and conditions are linked, directly or indirectly, to it or rather, a lack of it. What is methylation?  It’s the chemical process of donating a methyl group (CH3) to a molecule or compound.  This doesn’t sound like much, but this little group is very important to how our bodies function, as I’m finding out. It not only helps with energy production and builds immune cells and neurotransmitters, but it also processes hormones, detoxifies our bodies, puts protective myelin sheath on our nerves, and can be responsible for epigenetic gene regulation. Because of its association with all of these essential processes, an inability to methylate is linked to a whole host of diseases and conditions.  Methylation defects are linked to: Diabetes Alcoholism Cardiovascular disease Cancer Osteoporosis Spina bifida Autism Fibromyalgia…

How My Heavy Metal Poisoning Damaged My Sons

After finding out that I had heavy metal poisoning, I immediately thought about my sons.  Was it possible that I had passed any of this on to them? Could this be responsible for their sensory processing disorder (SPD), asthma, allergies, eczema, acid reflux, and developmental delays? Would I finally find the common thread that I had been looking for all along that tied all of these conditions together? Yes, unfortunately. My Sons’ Heavy-Metal Toxicity After finding out about my toxicity, I had both sons tested with a heavy-metal hair test because it’s not invasive.  My older son was in the 97th percentile for heavy-metal toxicity; my younger at the 90th. That means that my older son had more heavy metals in him than 97% of people in the reference group, which contains roughly 40,000 people. Heavy Metal Reference Range (g/g) Older Son (g/g) Younger Son (g/g) Aluminum <8.000 16.000 13.000 Antimony <0.066 0.110 0.210 Arsenic <0.080 0.047 0.098 Barium <0.500…

What Is Gut Dysbiosis?

What Is Gut Dysbiosis?

Gut dysbiosis — this topic is the motherlode.  It’s one of the two core (in my opinion) reasons for the explosion of chronic childhood illnesses we see today. Gut Dysbiosis:  A Common Link Among the Epidemic of Children’s Chronic Illnesses First, let’s discuss the numbers behind this epidemic:  How many kids did you know when you were growing up that had autism, ADHD, acid reflux, allergies, asthma, developmental delays and/or mental health issues? I knew of only ONE child with any one of these in the whole time I went to school from elementary school to high school.  Now that I am a mom, I can tell you that it’s the rare child who does NOT have any chronic illnesses.  The statistics for today’s kids are staggering: 1 in 6 African-American children has asthma; 1 of every 8 children has it 1 in 5 children has allergic eczema 2-3 out of every 5 children have hay fever 1 in 3…

Approaches to Healing

naturopathy

While we would love to list organizations and healing approaches that are backed by leading medical institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, the Cleveland Clinic, or Mt. Sinai, the truth is that few of the mainstream conventional medical institutions have much to offer children with chronic illnesses in terms of actionable protocols for recovery or cure. While a tremendous amount of research is ongoing at these prestigious institutions (and we hope to see answers soon!), families dealing with chronic illnesses do not have time to wait. Thus, parents and some pioneering physicians and medical researchers have found that in order to heal children they have had to step outside the boundaries of convention. Remarkably, parents, physicians and researchers who have dared to step outside of convention have healed and recovered children from illnesses that were once thought to be lifelong or incurable.   One very important caveat is necessary here: Depending on the severity of illness, the path to recovery…

ADHD/ADD

Many mental health illnesses and disorders such as ADHD/ADD, depression, and bipolar disorder are increasingly being understood as mere symptoms of underlying medical issues or biological imbalances in the body. Typically, disorders such as ADHD have complex etiologies that are specific to each individual who manifests symptoms. However, most children who manifest the symptoms of a psychiatric, behavioral, or mood disorder are also suffering from immune dysregulation and/or gut dysbiosis–two medical conditions that are treatable. Currently, prescription medications that are used to treat many of these conditions simply mask the symptoms and do not address the root cause. Among the environmental variables most commonly linked to the etiology of ADHD are diet/allergies, disruptions to neurotransmitter systems (which is related to gut dysbiosis and immune dysregulation), and chemical/toxic exposure. Gut and immune health are of critical importance in disorders such as ADHD. Below is an excerpt from A Compromised Generation:  The Epidemic of Chronic Illness in America’s Children, explaining the importance…

Mitochondrial Dysfunction

The following symptoms may indicate that your child has mitochondrial dysfunction or a problem in energy production. Large motor delays Failure to thrive Growth delays Low muscle tone Extreme fatigue Inability to regulate temperature Autistic symptoms Global muscle weakness Difficulty waking Even if your child does not display any of the “classic” symptoms of mitochondrial dysfunction (listed above), your child may still be affected. It is now believed by many research scientists and an increasing number of physicians that mitochondrial dysfunction may be a critical part of the underlying pathophysiology in the following health conditions: Autism Bipolar disorder Schizophrenia Depression Diabetes Parkinson’s disease Asthma Chronic fatigue syndrome Alzheimer’s disease Some gastronintestinal disorders, among others Click here (Mito Dysfunction in Health Conditions) to download an overview of the recent medical literature linking mitochondrial dysfunction to many well known illnesses. What is mitochondrial dysfunction? Mitochondria are the “power plants” of the body.  They make the energy to power cells in every part of…
