What is causing so many children to become chronically ill?
The answer to this question is complicated and varies significantly from one child to the next, but there are some common underlying biological mechanisms and environmental factors that contribute to many of the chronic illnesses that affect our children. It is the presence of these factors, occurring in a “perfect storm,” that is responsible for the epidemic of chronic illness in America’s children today. Particular changes in American life over the last century have precipitated an increased likelihood of children developing chronic illness, but the changes that have been seen over the last few decades are accelerating this likelihood at an unprecedented rate.
